The 5158 Electrical Conversion Module (ECM) provides four (4) RS-232 outputs and four (4) RS-232 inputs. Built around 1488 & 1489 chips for true RS232 levels and voltage tolerance, all outputs come up in the 1, mark or idle state. Electrically this is a negative output voltage, the start bit is always a 0 or a positive voltage level.

ECM 5158 provides RS-232 I/O as eight ports of RX-TX, or four ports of RX-CTS-TX-RTS. The implementation depends on the IP in the FPGA.

Using 1488 & 1489 chips delivers true RS232 levels and voltage tolerance. All outputs come up in the 1, mark or idle state. Electrically this is a negative output voltage, the start bit is always a 0 or a positive voltage level.

Additionally eight bit of RS-232 input monitor the state of the 8 RS-232 outputs for diagnostic purposes.

In the block diagram below a Technobox P/N 1866 breakout panel provide 4 RJ11 type connections for the RS-232 ports. The RS-232 ports can be configured for RX/TX 2 per RJ11 connector, or 1 per RJ11 connector.

Note that a four (4) of the Technobox P/N 1866 breakout panel is in use, allowing other ECMs to use the remaining twelve (12) RJ11 connections.

A serial identification circuit prevents use with incorrect FPGA IP. Typical RS232 usages include military, medical, transportation and industrial control
