P/N 3508 provides 2 asynchronous ports. Each port implements the Data Terminal Equipment (“DTE”) side of an RS232 interface, which is the side normally used by the computer. Compare this with the “DCE” side, which is exemplified by a modem device. P/N 3508 is compatible in applications previously using Technobox P/N 5284. The assembly shown breaks out the 3508 ports into single 9 pin D connectors. The ECM carrier attaches to a Technobox P/N 4988 breakout panel through a 68 pin SCSI cable.

ECM P/N 3508 provides RS-232 I/O as two ports configured as a three output / five input (DCD, RXD, TXD, DTR, DSR, RTS, CTS,RI) type interface. This is a typical application but the actual implementation will depend on FPGA IP. Using 1488 & 1489 chips delivers true RS232 levels and voltage tolerance. All outputs come up in the 1, mark or idle state. Electrically this is a negative output voltage, the start bit is always a 0 or a positive voltage level. Additionally six bits of RS-232 input monitor the state of the six RS-232 outputs for diagnostic purposes. In the example shown a Technobox P/N 4988 breakout panel provides an external termination via two (2) 9-pin d-sub connections for the RS-232 ports. Note that channels from the 3058 consume only a part of the the Technobox P/N 4988 breakout panel, allowing other ECMs to use the remaining d-sub connections. A serial identification circuit prevents use with incorrect FPGA IP.

Other RS232 usages include military, medical, transportation and industrial control systems.
